Adriana Angarita-Fonseca, PT, MSc, MSc, PhD

Dr. Adriana Angarita-Fonseca is a Research Associate and epidemiologist at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC). Her research focuses on cardiovascular epidemiology, sex and gender health research, hypertension, social determinants of health, rehabilitation, and healthy aging.

She completed a Bachelor’s degree in Physiotherapy and a Master’s degree in Epidemiology at the Universidad Industrial de Santander (Colombia), followed by a Master’s degree in Statistics at the Universidad de Valparaíso (Chile). She obtained her PhD in Community and Population Health Science from the University of Saskatchewan, where she conducted research within the Saskatchewan Research Data Center.

Dr. Angarita-Fonseca completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Chronic Pain Epidemiology at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue and the Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CRCHUM). She subsequently completed a senior postdoctoral fellowship in Sex and Gender in Cardiovascular Epidemiology at McGill University.

Dr. Angarita-Fonseca’s research examines how biological, social, and gender-related factors influence cardiovascular health across the life course. Her current work focuses on hypertension, functional decline, cardiovascular outcomes, and brain health, with a particular emphasis on integrating sex, gender, and social determinants of health into precision prevention and rehabilitation strategies. She uses large population-based cohorts, linked administrative health data, and advanced epidemiological and statistical methods to investigate cardiovascular health inequalities and improve health outcomes.

Her research has been supported by competitive national funding, including a a Postdoctoral Training Award from the Fonds de recherche du Québec and Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Postdoctoral Fellowship. She has published extensively in epidemiology, rehabilitation, cardiovascular health, and health services research.

Dr. Angarita-Fonseca has more than 15 years of teaching experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, research methods, and evidence-based practice across undergraduate and graduate programs. She has supervised and mentored over 100 trainees, including undergraduate students, graduate students, medical residents, and clinical trainees. She currently serves as Director of Communications for the Canadian Society for Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CSEB) and contributes to national peer-review and research funding activities.

In addition to her research and teaching activities, Dr. Angarita-Fonseca has led international capacity-building initiatives in rehabilitation and public health across Latin America. Through collaborations with academic and community partners, she has contributed to professional development programs, knowledge mobilization activities, and the advancement of evidence-informed healthcare practices in underserved settings.
